“Minatoya Guesthouse” is run by Ryoji-san, a pro fisherman, and Kana-san, a female diver called “Ama”. For some reason, this place naturally draws in all kinds of fun and interesting people. Some keep coming back because they’re hooked on the charm of Iki Island, others stop by while traveling, and some even stay long-term as staff like me. Everyone has their own unique story, and they’re all a little crazy in the best way.
Even the locals can’t resist joining in, and before you know it, the place turns into a full-blown party. The chance to connect deeply with the locals here is something you can’t get just anywhere—it’s a blast! No wonder so many people fall in love with the vibe and end up moving to Iki.
One thing you can’t miss at Minatoya Guesthouse is the food. The meals, crafted almost single-handedly by Ryoshi, feature plenty of fresh, local ingredients. With his background in art school, you can see his creative touch in the stunning presentation of every dish, leaving both guests and staff in awe. Once the meal begins, everyone dives in with hearty appetites, and you can’t help but hear plenty of “Delicious!” paired with happy smiles around the table.
The time spent sharing meals with guests and staff feels just like being part of a big, warm family. That comforting atmosphere not only soothes your tired soul but also gives you the strength to take on the next day with renewed energy.
My month as a helper at Minatoya Guesthouse turned out to be so much more than just a helping gig. It reminded me of the importance of connections and community in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. By the time I was leaving Iki, I couldn’t help but think, “I definitely want to come back here someday!”
Minatoya Guesthouse isn’t just a place to stay for travelers—it feels more like a place to come home to. So now the real question is, when should I come back?
